CAC: Republicans’ Failure to Fund the Government Puts Americans at Risk
Congressional Republicans have turned a blind eye to Trump’s illegal, draconian cuts to lifesaving climate programs.
WASHINGTON–Today, Congressional Republicans and the Trump administration drove the federal government into a shutdown after refusing to negotiate for a funding package that protects Americans’ health and the climate and holds the Trump administration accountable to its legal spending obligations. Climate Action Campaign (CAC) Director Margie Alt released the following statement following failed votes on stopgap funding in the Senate:
"All year, the Trump administration has made dangerous, illegal cuts to programs that undermine everything from clean energy investments at the EPA to critical extreme weather forecasts at the National Weather Service to disaster response at FEMA. These programs protect Americans from fires, floods, and other weather disasters that are getting worse because of climate change.
"Rather than working with Democrats on a reasonable plan to keep the government open, reverse the cuts, and commit the Trump administration to spend funds as directed by Congress, Republicans have once again cynically chosen partisanship over people, put profits for polluters before Americans’ health and safety, and forced a reckless shutdown of the federal government.
"Our families and communities are suffering while polluters enjoy generous taxpayer-funded handouts. Republicans need to get back to the table, end this shutdown, and do the people’s business as they were elected to do.”
