CAC’s Alt Slams Trump, Zeldin Climate Chaos Plan
Rescinding the Endangerment Finding is “An All-Out Assault on the Environment and the Health of Every Person in America”
WASHINGTON–According to media reports, Donald Trump and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin are moving forward with their plan to make climate denial official U.S. policy and to put polluters first at the expense of our health, environment, and economy, by rescinding the EPA’s Endangerment Finding. The Endangerment Finding, established in 2009, requires the EPA to protect people from climate change-causing pollution.
“Trump and Zeldin have launched an all-out assault on the environment and the health of every person, family, and community in America,” said Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign. “This administration is sacrificing our lives, clean air, clean water, and causing climate chaos while lining the pockets of big polluters . This is not public policy – it’s profiteering at the expense of our health and our lives.”
Sixteen years ago, the EPA found that carbon pollution, methane, and four other climate pollutants endanger public health, a finding endorsed by both the Supreme Court and by Congress under the Clean Air Act. Trump and Zeldin are planning to reverse science and ignore the law to hasten their plans to undo pollution limits for power plants, cars, trucks, and other sources of climate pollution. This proposal defies countless court rulings and evidence produced in thousands of studies that demonstrates how climate change, fueled by climate pollution, is causing devastating impacts on people’s lives. Today’s action also goes against the desires of the American people, who overwhelmingly support climate action and the intent of the EPA’s Endangerment Finding.
Trump and Zeldin’s proposal will leave all Americans more vulnerable to climate related wildfires, sea level rise, and increasingly deadly extreme heat and weather. It will inject more uncertainty for consumers as energy bills rise. It will exacerbate health impacts from climate change, such as increased asthma attacks and heat-related deaths, that are becoming more frequent and severe.
“Zeldin and Trump’s pro-polluter, anti-science and anti-health agenda will lead to more devastating and deadly wildfires, floods, storms, and other tragedies like we’ve seen this summer,” added Alt. “Their Climate Chaos Plan allows big polluters to line their own pockets while causing millions of people to die to pay for it.”
