CAC’s Alt: Firing EPA Scientists Doesn’t Make the Science any Less True or Protect Americans
WASHINGTON–Lee Zeldin, the EPA administrator who vowed to "leave science to the scientists" in his agency, on Friday announced the closure of the Office of Research and Development and firing of hundreds of those "talented scientists" he promised to work with. In response to this announcement, Margie Alt, director of the Climate Action Campaign, released the following statement:
“Firing scientists and shutting down science at the EPA won’t make the climate crisis any less real and does nothing to protect people or our air and water from dangerous pollution. With fewer experts helping to guide environmental decisions, Only the big polluters will benefit, while every American suffers.
“In Texas hundreds of people, many of them children, were swept away by a flash flood caused by extreme weather supercharged by climate change. This move to weaken the EPA’s ability to limit the pollution worsening these catastrophes – coming mere days after that tragedy and other deaths linked to the climate crisis – shows the callousness and shortsightedness of this administration’s actions.
“Firing scientists, canceling science-based research programs like the National Climate Assessment, defunding the national weather service and NOAA leave our families and our communities unprepared and unprotected as the climate crisis grows deadlier and more costly every year. Lee Zeldin’s dismantling of his own agency will ensure other communities will suffer as Texas is suffering. The climate crisis doesn’t care who’s in office. The American people won’t forget the Trump-Zeldin administration that turned their backs on science and our families.”
