CAC: TRUMP’s DOE ORDERS EDDYSTONE TO STAY OPEN ENDANGERING PENNSYLVANIANS’ HEALTH AND WALLETS

WASHINGTON – The Trump Department of Energy has ordered  the Eddystone oil and gas power plant in Delaware County Pennsylvania to remain in operation past the previous November 26, 2025 expiration deadline. The aging plant has long been flagged by local officials, health advocates, and community groups for its high pollution levels and reliability issues. Despite clear evidence that cleaner, more affordable energy options are available to maintain grid reliability, DOE is choosing the most expensive and most harmful option for Pennsylvania families.

Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign (CAC), released the following statement in response:

“Instead of steering Pennsylvania toward already widely available cleaner and cheaper energy solutions, the Trump DOE—under Secretary Chris Wright—is bending over backwards to prop up another outdated fossil fuel power plant for the benefit of their deep pocketed oil, gas and coal benefactors.

Communities near Eddystone have carried the burden of this decrepit oil and gas plant’s pollution for decades, and extending its life so far beyond its expiration date only guarantees more of the same. Higher costs, more pollution, and grave health threats will continue to be placed on families who’ve made it abundantly clear they want to transition to safer, cleaner and more affordable energy.

The Trump administration continues to claim it’s looking out for working people, but instead it’s sticking Pennsylvania families with rising utility bills, dirtier air, more climate pollution and a future shaped by the greedy desires of Big Oil and Gas executives instead of the needs of everyday working Americans. This is an unnecessary and reckless decision that will make life more dangerous and less affordable for Pennsylvanians. They deserve far better.”
