CAC: Trump EPA Abandons Soot Protections, Putting Countless Americans in Grave Danger
WASHINGTON– The Trump Environmental Protection Agency has moved to abandon the legal defense of limits to soot, or fine particle pollution, one of the most dangerous contaminants. The 2024 standard remains in effect pending action by the U.S. District Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign (CAC), released the following statement in response:
“The Trump EPA’s decision to abandon protections against soot pollution – one of the deadliest air contaminants – is utterly outrageous, gravely dangerous, and scientifically indefensible. They have apparently decided it’s better to protect polluters and ignore scientists who estimate that soot pollution causes approximately 100,000 deaths every year. Many of these deaths would be prevented by the tighter standards under attack from polluters and their allies.
"Our right to clean air – a foundational health protection – is being willfully ignored by this administration in service of their Polluters First Agenda. I am flabbergasted that the Trump EPA continues to line the pockets of their fossil fuel benefactors rather than protect the lungs and lives of average Americans.
