CAC on the Trump Administration’s Irresponsible AI Action Plan

The AI Action Plan misses the mark on tech and climate

WASHINGTON—Recently passed cryptocurrency legislation and the administration’s new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Plan make clear that the United States is entering an unprecedented technological era that will dramatically strain the U.S. electricity grid, drive up demand, and increase electricity bills. Climate Action Campaign Director Margie Alt issued the following statement in response:

“Emerging technologies come with massive electricity demand that is straining the capacity of our energy grid. The only safe, popular, and responsible way to meet the increased demand and responsibly advance these technologies is by investing in clean, sustainable, American-made energy to fill the gap. It’s backwards and short-sighted to usher in a new era of innovation by powering it with old, unreliable, expensive and polluting fossil fuel energy. Yet that’s exactly what the Trump administration’s wrong-headed AI Action Plan does.

“We need to invest in solutions to meet rising demand that won’t increase pollution, make our communities sick, or exacerbate climate change. Solar and wind energy, paired with battery storage and upgrades to our nation’s crumbling infrastructure, is a safe and reliable way to add the energy capacity we need while also lowering costs for businesses and consumers and reducing climate risk. Winning the AI race won’t matter if it renders our air unbreathable or our communities unlivable. AI can change the world for the better, but not if climate change ruins the environment first.”
