CAC: GOP Budget Would Raise Costs on American Families, Put Polluters First

Reconciliation package proposal would repeal popular clean energy tax credits and investments while giving polluters a free pass

WASHINGTON–Over the weekend and today, House Republicans released the Energy and Commerce and Ways and Means pieces of their budget reconciliation bill. The packages include draconian cuts to clean energy investments, such as tax credits for rooftop solar, utility-scale renewable energy, and electric vehicles. It also eliminates climate pollution and air quality protections – such as pollution monitoring programs and tailpipe pollution standards – and scraps environmental justice programs, like community block grants that help disadvantaged communities reduce pollution and invest in resilient infrastructure. The proposed bill would also give the Treasury Secretary broad and unilateral new authority to designate nonprofit groups as "terrorist supporting organizations," which means their tax-exempt status could be stripped and their funds frozen. Rose Garr, Senior Director of Government Affairs at the Climate Action Campaign (CAC), issued the following statement:

"Republicans’ budget reconciliation plan is a gift to polluters and a slap in the face for the American people. The benefits marked for reduction and repeal are wildly popular because they help Americans save money on their electricity bills and on gas. These cuts will mean Americans get fewer choices, higher bills, and dirtier air, while polluters pad their pockets.

"Through these bills, Congressional Republicans join the Trump administration’s effort to systematically defund clean energy, dismantle climate and public health protections, making it easier than ever for polluters to expand their destructive operations over community objections or environmental concerns. As if this wasn’t enough, this proposal gives the Treasury Secretary power to silence civil society groups who dare oppose their agenda.

"This Polluters First Agenda will do nothing to bring down costs or improve health for American families. It promotes a vision for the economy that is firmly stuck in the past and does nothing to address the suffering millions of Americans are already experiencing as the climate crisis worsens. Congress must reject this plan that only benefits polluters and get back to work on making life better for the American people."
