CAC’s Margie Alt: Four Corners Floods Latest Example of Need for Climate Action
WASHINGTON–Flash flooding is displacing residents, washing out roads, and, worst of all, claiming lives in Arizona, New Mexico, and across the Four Corners region because of conditions caused by climate change. Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign, which has been pushing for federal climate action to protect Arizonans, released the following statement in response:
“Arizonans can’t seem to get a break from the devastating impacts of climate change, regardless of the time of year. This summer was the hottest summer on record, with sweltering heat waves making daily life difficult, especially for children and seniors. Now that it’s fall, massive rains driven by the climate-change supercharged El Niño are flooding homes, wiping out roads, and causing significant destruction.
“Once the water recedes, people will need help rebuilding. A fully funded FEMA and equitably distributed recovery resources will be essential for these communities. Without it, Arizonans will continue to be battered by extreme heat and other climate-induced extreme weather. Arizona deserves better.
“This cycle of devastation is likely what the future will look like, and it won’t resolve itself. The only way to break the cycle is to tackle the climate crisis head-on by cutting climate pollution, expanding clean energy, and investing in a resilient grid. This flooding is the latest example of the need for federal climate action.”
