CAC’s MARGIE ALT ON THE LEADERSHIP CHANGE AT THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY
WASHINGTON-Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign, released the following statement in response to Donald Trump’s firing of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and naming Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin as her replacement:
"Kristi Noem’s tenure at DHS was itself a disaster — one FEMA would never have the budget to clean up. Beyond her unseemly enforcement tactics and her attacks on American citizens, her interference at FEMA — the agency charged with helping Americans survive and recover from hurricanes, wildfires, floods, and other climate change-driven extreme weather events — left devastated communities stranded without the resources to rebuild. Her mismanagement has come at an unimaginable cost. Good riddance.
"Sen. Mullin is an interesting selection. Oklahoma knows better than most what it means to stare down a disaster. The state suffered seven federally declared climate disasters causing $1 billion or more in damage in 2024 alone and many Oklahomans have relied on FEMA to help pick up the pieces. Sen. Mullin’s track record when it comes to delivering FEMA aid to people who need it, is mixed, and it’s my sincere hope he won’t be another political operator who uses disaster relief as a political weapon, but will actively and effectively implement FEMA’s mission. As the impacts of climate change affect more and more Americans every year, communities across this country can’t afford another Kristi Noem. Let’s hope we didn’t get one."
