CAC’s Margie Alt on 24-State Lawsuit Against EPA’s Repeal of the Endangerment Finding

WASHINGTON – Today, a coalition of public officials from 24 states announced a lawsuit against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to block EPA administrator Lee Zeldin’s decision to repeal the endangerment finding, the legal basis for the agency to set limits on climate pollution. Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign, released the following statement in response:

"Today, 24 states, along with dozens of cities and counties, stood up to make clear what should never need to be said: American lives are not expendable. Climate change is driving extreme heat, wildfires, floods, and storms that are devastating communities across this country right now. Our children are breathing dirtier air, our families are facing greater health risks, and our most vulnerable communities are bearing the heaviest burden, all so this administration can do the bidding of the fossil fuel industry.

"The EPA’s repeal of the endangerment finding was not a legal or scientific decision; it was a political one that flew in the face of decades of settled science court precedent. It stripped the federal government of the very authority it needs to protect our air, our health, and our climate. And it did so without a shred of new evidence to justify the move.

"We commend the attorneys general and public officials who joined this critical lawsuit for their courage, their leadership, and their unwavering commitment to the health and safety of the people they serve. This is exactly the kind of bold action this moment demands.”
