CAC: SPEED Act Fails to Address the Energy Affordability Crisis WIth Real Solutions
The bill fails to make reforms to ease soaring prices, but would exacerbate climate pollution.
WASHINGTON–Today, the House passed the SPEED Act, a bill that drastically undermines community involvement, restricts science, and favors fossil fuels in its proposed changes to the energy permitting process. Margie Alt, director of the Climate Action Campaign, released the following statement in response:
"All year, Republicans in Congress and the Trump administration have repeatedly shown they aren’t serious about solving the energy affordability crisis or getting more clean energy on the grid. If they were, they wouldn’t have spent this year cutting investments and blocking projects – such as wind, solar, and battery storage – that are the most cost-effective, fastest-to-deploy, and lowest-risk sources of electricity.
"Congress has the tools to restore measures that reduce permitting delays, get much-needed projects on the grid, and improve grid reliability. Instead, House leadership pushed through a bill that fails to protect ongoing wind and solar projects from Donald Trump’s reprehensible cancellations. The bill rolls out the red carpet for polluters while kneecapping communities’ ability to weigh in against dirty oil and gas projects. And, the vote today would limit the role of science in permitting decisions.
"The United States needs more energy to meet rising demand and ease soaring prices. The SPEED Act fails to meet the moment or solve the problem."
