STATEMENT FROM CAC’s MARGIE ALT ON ENDANGERMENT FINDING REPEAL
WASHINGTON – Today, the Trump administration announced the repeal of the Endangerment Finding, the legal and scientific finding that climate pollution is a threat to public health, denying decades of science and ignoring previous legal decisions on the matter. Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign, released the following statement in response to the announcement:
“Repealing the Endangerment Finding is confirmation that the Trump administration treats our lives and our health as expendable. At a time when millions are facing the impacts of extreme weather or struggling to pay soaring electricity prices, the administration is putting industry profits over the health and safety of the public.
“With its action today the Trump administration makes climate denial the official policy of the U.S. But denying the basic facts won’t make them any less true: The Endangerment Finding is a statement of fact based on a mountain of evidence. Fossil fuels are a significant contributor to the climate crisis. The law requiring the EPA to act to protect the American people from climate-harming pollutants – affirmed several times by the courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court – is unequivocal.
“The Trump administration is tragically wrong: on climate science, which is unassailable, on the dangers of climate pollution, which are real and immediate, and on the need for unlimited fossil fuel production, which can’t compete with clean energy on costs or safety. By undoing critical climate protections and unleashing fossil fuel pollution, people will get sick, and will die. We will hold this administration accountable for their actions.”
