CAC: Abandoning Climate Treaty, Trump Makes U.S. Vulnerable and Alone
WASHINGTON – Today, Donald Trump signed a Presidential Memorandum to withdraw the United States from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), making the U.S. the only nation in the world outside the more than 30-year-old global treaty. This reckless move follows the Trump administration’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement last year, leaving the U.S. wholly outside global climate cooperation. Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign (CAC), released the following statement in response:
“Trump’s order today is a deeply irresponsible abdication of U.S. global leadership. By exiting the UNFCCC, the Trump administration is making the U.S. dangerously isolated as other nations set the rules for — and reap the benefits of — the global clean energy economy.
"Climate impacts are already endangering millions of Americans every year, driving up health and utility costs for American families, straining infrastructure, and threatening economic stability. Climate pollution knows no borders. Walking away from global cooperation designed to fight the biggest threat facing humanity does nothing to shield Americans from those realities; it only guarantees we have no voice in addressing them.”
