CAC: Trump Administration Hands Consumers More Price Hikes and Polluters Another Giveaway

Washington – Today, the Trump Administration and its Department of Energy quietly rewrote the rules governing a portion of an $8.8 billion Biden-era home energy rebate program to bar households from accessing funds when replacing gas appliances with cleaner and more efficient electric models. The new guidance prohibits so-called “fuel switching," limiting rebates to households that already own electric appliances. Margie Alt, Director of the Climate Action Campaign (CAC), released the following statement in response:

“The Trump administration’s decision to block Americans from using home energy rebates to ditch their gas appliances is the Polluters First Agenda in its purest form: It eliminates consumer choice, puts a thumb on the scale for the fossil fuel industry, and sends working families the bill.

“The Energy Department’s new guidance makes it harder for families to afford to make better choices for their health, their wallets, and the climate. Electric appliances cost less to run, leading to real cost savings and less pollution. Rather than let consumers choose what’s best for their own homes and wallets, this administration is rigging the market to keep Americans locked into fossil fuels and higher bills for years to come. Low and moderate-income families, the very people these programs were designed to help, will pay the price. As usual in Trump’s America, consumers lose. Polluters win. Same pro-fossil fuel agenda. New giveaway.”
