The following is a statement from Climate Action Campaign Director Margie Alt in response to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s new cleaner car standards for light-duty vehicles.

“This is an important moment in the fight against climate change. President Biden and the EPA have finalized a new  standard for Cleaner Cars that will slash climate pollution from the transportation sector. EPA estimates that these new pollution protections will eliminate 7.2 Billion metric tons of climate pollution, the equivalent of removing all tailpipe pollution for four years. This standard by itself will prevent 2500 deaths in 2055 on the way to supercharging the transition to zero-pollution vehicles.

“President Biden promised to slash climate pollution by at least half by 2035. The transportation sector accounts for 29% of climate pollution in the United States. That number will be significantly reduced with this new pollution standard. President Biden and the EPA under the direction of Administrator Michael Regan are working hard to deliver on this promise.  We expect even more from this dynamic duo, including finishing the job with additional standards to clean up transportation and the power sector in the coming months.”
